Intent

The intention of the geography curriculum, at Ovingham Middle School, is to inspire our children’s curiosity and interest to explore the world that we live in and its people.  We believe that geography is the subject which facilitates understanding of our dynamic world and prepares each one of us for the role of global citizen in the 21st century.

Our HEART values underpin all that we do.  As well as providing opportunities to study the world in which we live, a key priority is to celebrate and exploit our local surroundings so that pupils understand, and appreciate, the incredible charm of their locality.  We want pupils to appreciate how places and landscapes are formed, understand how people and environments interact, appreciate what consequences arise from our everyday decisions, and show acceptance towards a diverse range of cultures and societies which exist and interconnect. We aim to develop inquisitive geographers who show resilience and formulate questions, develop intellectual skills and who find answers to issues affecting their lives and the lives of those around them, developing excellence in using investigative tools such as maps, as well as digital communication technologies.  Our carefully planned fieldwork allows pupils to respond with honesty to enquiry questions, promoting the importance of teamwork.

Throughout their time with us, pupils learn to value and care for the planet and its inhabitants.  They leave us with their eyes open to the beauty and wonder around them and appreciating the complexity of attitudes and values which shape the way we use, and misuse, the environment.
