Curriculum Intent

At Ovingham Middle School, we believe that music is a universal language which embodies one of the highest forms of creativity.  The music department ensures that our HEART values underpin everything that we do as we strive to inspire and motivate every learner to become a confident young musician.

A high-quality music education should influence pupils to develop a love of music, as well as building their resilience in developing their talent as musicians, striving for excellence.  Through the combination of singing, listening, composing, performing and theory strands, we aim to develop pupils’ self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement, encouraging them to speak open and honestly about preferences.   Throughout their time here, pupils are provided with opportunities to develop their abilities to make music, both individually, as well as with others, developing essential teamwork skills.  We celebrate the diverse musical talents of our young people and encourage these talents to be enjoyed and shared within our school as well as our wider community.  As pupils progress, they develop acceptance by critically engaging with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination and appreciation.
